They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42
The world is a strange place right now, wouldn’t you agree? There are unrest, uncertainty, and violence that can be thrust upon us at a moment’s notice. Our situation seems to change day by day, moment by moment.
The good news is that we are not the first people in history to experience this constant shifting landscape of culture. The first Christian community experienced this after Jesus’s death and resurrection as well. Their lives were totally transformed after those events. They were insulted, threatened, beaten, jailed, and eventually killed for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Every day must have been like walking on eggshells, waiting for the next horrible thing to happen.
What did they do in response to this? They simply devoted themselves to those tasks that will ensure their heavenly salvation. They listened to God’s word as taught them by the apostles. They hung around people who believed as they did. They celebrated the Lord’s supper of bread and wine, body and blood. Lastly, they prayed.
They prayed for their friends and families. They prayed for their enemies who were persecuting them. The prayed that unbelievers would be moved to faith and that their fellow believers would have their faith strengthened. They prayed for wisdom, courage, strength, and a thousand other things that they needed in order to be useful in furthering the Kingdom of God!
What are you DEVOTING yourself to in this time of crisis? What are you praying for God to change in your life? What can you thank God for today?
